The name, Busboys and Poets refers to American poet Langston Hughes, who worked as a busboy at the Wardman Park Hotel in the 1930s prior to gaining recognition as a writer. Whether you’re in the mood for a little bubbly or some eco-friendly grub, this U Street hot spot is a champ for casual dining. Vintage lounge chairs and overstuffed couches surround tables that rest beneath abstract art pieces that marry Washington’s political history and rich urban city culture. Their creative menu goes easy on the pockets while still managing to give your taste buds a pretty happenin’ time. Besides being one of the greatest restaurants on U Street, and maybe even the greater DC metro area, is it also a bookstore, fair trade market and gathering place where people can discuss issues of social justice and peace. The owners state their mission as seeking to enhance the community in bringing together a diverse clientele reflective of the surrounding neighborhoods. Busboys and Poets creates an environment where shared conversations over food and drink allow the progressive, artistic and literary communities to dialogue, educate and interact.

Getting Around in DC

Vroom vroom?

Not here. There are usually three different ways to get anywhere in ten minutes. None of them involve a car and that’s a good thing. Have you seen the layout? The roads were mapped out in the late 1700’s when we were still on our toes with British. Tangled cross-sections of street, bridge and nonsense are great at throwing off the enemy in circumstances of potential foreign invasion. Not so awesome when you’re trying to grab a cupcake at that new vegan bakery downtown. All the cool kids use public transportation. Saving the earth while saving your sanity - bag the car and take the Metro.
